superman does not need kryptonite.
kryptonite is what is left over from the explosion of superman (kal-el) home planet krypton. over the years, some of the leftovers have been irradiated and changed so that they can affect kryptonian life.
diff kinds of kryptonite affect superman in diff ways... for example:
green kryptonite - long exposure can kill superman
red kryptonite - makes supermans powers to go out of control or causes personality changes
gold kryptonite - permanently removes supermans powers
black kryptonite - splits the personality of kryptonians
there are a few others, but superman (or any other kryptonian) don't want or need kryptonite. some superman villians have been able to use it in the past for fuel though (metallo uses it to power his robotic body). and it has been used by supermans friends in the event he or some other kryptonian has gone over the edge (batman has a ring of kryptonite given to him by superman in the event he needs to be stopped)

Before DC rebooted their universe with the "Crisis On Infinite Earths" storyline (1986), the kryptonite came to earth with Superman. However, in 1971, all kryptonite on earth was turned into iron, so the only way to get kryptonite was to artificially produce it.
After the "Crisis" storyline, the origin on kryptonite was changed. According to the Wiki: "....an abortive detonation of a doomsday device by the Black Zero terrorist group set off a slow chain reaction within Krypton's core causing the native elements of Krypton to fuse together into a new radioactive element."
Anyways, there's actually way too many different forms of kryptonite to list (including green, red, gold, white, blue, anti-kryptonite, x-kryptonite, jewel kryptonite, and around 6 others), but the Wiki has a list and a description of each.

In real life Krypton is a very rare Noble Gas which glows green when it is electrically charged. In a solid form it is a white crystal .
In the Superman comics Kryptonite is a radioactive rock (sometime crystals) which can have strange effects on Superman.
Over the years there have been many colours of kryptonite all of which have had different effects on Superman. The most common is green kryptonite which takes away his powers and acts like a poison.

He doesn't need it, Kryptonite can kill Superman. It happened when the planet Krypton exploded. Just before that, Superman's parents sent him to earth as a baby. But when the planet blew up, it was like a giant atomic bomb, and all the pieces that went flying out into space became radioactive. Because it is from Krypton, it can affect Superman, and it is one of the few things he is not invulnerable to, like magic, Virus X (also from Krypton), psionics, weapons from krypton, red sun radiation, etc.
Kryptonite weakensSuperman almost instantly, takes away his powers while he is near it, and can kill him if he is left exposed to it. It gives him blood poisoning and turns him green. If the Kryptonite is removed from him (or vice versa) he can recover completely very quickly, but it would not take very long, maybe a half hour at most, for a good size (baseball size) piece of Kryptonite to kill Superman.
Also, from the way he reacts to it, it must be very painful. Think of getting radiation burns, like from a microwave oven! Now imagine Superman, who never feels pain, all of a sudden, IT HURTS! He's not used to it.

Superman does not need kryptonite, in fact kryptonite harms him, taking away his powers. Kryptonite is a mineral substance from Superman's home planet that arrived with him in a meteor shower.

Bottom line on this item is
kryptonite is a substance that originally came from the expolsion that distroyed Superman's home planet-- and it is very toxic to the super dude !! It weakens him almost immediately if it is present and it slowly drains his powers to the point that he is unable to function at all if it stays near him !! The theory is that it would eventually kill him if it were around him long enough---but of course it never is-- something always happens to rid the Super hero of the substance--- usually just in the nick of time !!!

Green kryptonite kills him.
Red kyrptonite gives him crazy powers (historically) or if you watch Smallville, it makes him a bad guy.
Black kryptonite (Smallville) will remove the bad guy if he happens to be possessed by one.
Gold kryptonite will permanently remove his powers.
