If you are invading someone's personal space you will be making them uncomfortable, so the signs will be those of irritation or embarrassment:

- no eye contact or fixed staring
- folding arms across the body
- holding clothing, bags, etc close to their body
- leaning away, trying to move away
- looking around anxiously
- frowning or looking unhappy
- trying to cut conversation short

Remember that you have no right to get close to someone unless they want you to, and that different people have a different view on what makes them comfortable. So if someone says you are too close, then you should respect that, even if you would not find it too close yourself. Arm's length or two foot is a reasonable distance for a conversation with someone.

Elbow in the ribs is my way of indicating. Although I was once in a queue at Tescos when a guy stood right in my face when he was to be right behind me. When I pointed this out he got aggressive so I lost my rag and threatened to do him in right there on the shop floor as a lesson to all observers. He got the message.

Are you in the desert in a US Army Humvee?
If so, you're probably invading something.

They look down and step back. That's what I do.

And it should be "are" the signs, because "signs" is plural. Little grammar lesson, no extra charge.
