Your hamster has mites from the wood chips in his cage!

I discovered this while I had my guinea pigs. The best thing is to get some flea power and apply IN VERY SMALL AMOUNTS to the fur.

Never use wood chips for caged animals because this will be an ongoing problem. I bought a paper shredder and used shredded letters in cages.

Don't use any shredded NEWSPAPER because the ink used is toxic.

You can also purchase paper pellets for small animal cages.

You need the help of a good vet. Mites are a common problem but you can't just put a flea collar on a hamster... LOL

The most common treatment is Ivermectin, but it's toxic at higher doses. For an animal that small you will need help getting dosing right. Then you'll be dosing him once every week to ten days for 3 times. This breaks the life cycle of the parasites.

I'd also clean the caging each time you dose him to speed up the process.

If you have money for bedding, food, and computer access, you have money for the vet. No, I don't believe that you can't use a credit card or borrow money from your parents for the vet. If you really can't afford a vet, you shouldn't have the pet in the first place. Seriously, you need to go to vet. I would NOT use bird mite spray. Rodents have very sensitive skin. The vet will give you some medicine for rodent mites. It's not that expensive as it's a very common problem. I suggest you go sooner than later. I had a mouse that had mites and ended up itching her eye out in ONE DAY. They can do some serious damage. If you must, you might be able to call the vet and get some mite medicine without a visit.

Take the cage, hamster, bedding, etc. throw it outside in a large plastic bag. However, if you want to save the Hamster, clean the cage fully, change the bedding, clean the mites with a cleaner supplied by by a vet.

More than likely you are keeping your hamster in unsanitary conditions, your going to have to keep their cage cleaner, I would recommend going to vet, if that is to much trouble for you, go to the drug store and buy NON-PESTICIDE based mite/lice shampoo, bath them in that until the problem is gone. DON'T let him get cold after the bath.!

Getting rid of the mites is not good enough you must find the source of the problem.
