If the child is old enough to sign his name, have him sign the back, and then just deposit it. If the child is too young to sign, a check should not have been written to him in the first place, but you can sign his name like this: "John Doe, a minor, by Mary Doe, parent and natural guardian."

If the child is old enough have them sign it. Otherwise, just write for deposit only on the back and your checking account number and you should be fine!!

You can take the kid to the bank with you and tell them he/she got the check for his birthday and open an account in his name. The money should not go into your account, it is not yours.

Don't mingle the child's money with your own. Create a simple savings or money market account with your bank and you be the co-owner/custodian.
