Any engine needs three things to run. Fuel/air mix, spark, compression.

Start by making sure you have spark. You can remove one wire, and carefully put a screw driver in the clip and hold it near a ground (hold the handle of the screw driver) while someone cranks it over. If you don't get a good solid blue spark, there is your problem. Or if you are high tech, you can test plugs this way: http://www.xs4all.nl/~sotty/car/Spark_Plug_Tester.html

If you have spark, next see if you have fuel. If it's fuel injected, there will probably be a place on the intake line that looks like a valve stem for a tire. Take off the cap, press the button and see if you are getting fuel to the engine. If not, listen around the fuel filler cap while someone turns the key to on. Do you hear the pump running?

Assuming you have both spark and fuel, you can do a compression check next if you have the tester.

Once you have fuel/air, spark and compression, it should run.

Sounds like it may be a bad distributor. Some of the late model eclipses and Dodge avengers have problems with this. The really crappy thing is that you can only purchase them as complete assemblies. You may want to try a junk yard or auto recycling yard for a used part. New the part runs near $1000.00. Used you may be able to find one around $250 - 300.

could either be the fuel pump, the starter, or a fuse. our truck did the same thing about 2 weeks ago and it was just a burnt fuse. i forgot which fuse it was, but i would first start there. it starting sounding and running hard so we got it home and it wouldnt start.

Could be a bad fuel pump. Or even simpler, maybe a clogged fuel filter.

check your spark plugs and your starter. If they are working properly, take it to the dealer and have them run a diagnostic test.
