When I am at a party and I don't want to talk to someone who starts up a conversation and asks what I do, I will tell them I am an "astrophysicist." This will usually intimidate them and they will wander away. If I DO want to talk to them, I will say "astronomer" which usually elicits a slew of questions.
Some astro people who are arrogant or insecure always introduce themselves as astrophysicists. I used to think that astronomy was more observational, and astrophysics was more theory and modeling, but having seen it from the inside, there is no distinction.

Astrophysics is the study of the physics of celestial objects. Astrophysicists study the physical properties of large objects in the sky. It can be considered a branch of physics or astronomy, or its more like a combination of the two.
