Wallace was born around 1276, although the exact birthdate and place are unknown. His father was Sir Malcolm Wallace, and he was the second of three sons. William had no male heirs, and today's Wallaces are descended from other family branches.

John Baliol was king of Scots when Wallace was at the height of his powers.
Not much of a king but Wallace acknowledged him as sovereign.
He DID have the strongest claim but Longshanks chose him for other reasons.
Wallace was knighted and became The Guardian Of Scotland, along with Sir Andrew De Moray.
He was tried for treason in London, a ludicrous situation as he never swore fealty to Longshanks.
It wouldn't have mattered what he was charged with, he was always going to be murdered by England.
On the field of Bannockburn in 1314 his work was completed by Robert Bruce, King of Scots.
