hi, what you want to do is download Dr TCP, http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
It will tweak your network settings to optimise it giving you the best speed and input the type of broadband internet service you have.
XP is set up for all types of net connections so you have to fine tune it in order to get the best you can attain.
try using Firefox, theres a plug in called Fasterfox, makes browsing so much quicker.
best of luck.

this is a method mate that will work...100% this works with all bt broadband routers including the home hub simply switch off the home hub(or router) and unplug it from the wall socket, then wait for around 30 seconds then plug it back in and switch back on(you must wait for 30 seconds) if you have the home hub,you must then press the wireless association button on the back of the home hub for 15 to 20 seconds(if you dont have a home hub ignore this part) then all the lights will go off then appear one by one once all the light are lit then you can use the broadband agin and you will notice a massive improvement in your speed i sometimes use this method around once a week to give me optimal download speeds, the only downside is it resets the hub phones but it only takes 2 minutes to set up again so thats not too bad i would also recommend a spyware scan, but you have done this give this a go and let me know if it works good luck mate

i have been with bt broadband for 3 years so i hope i can give you some advice
firstly bt have a habit of telling you that you will get 8meg connection speed when in reality you will only get between 1 and 3.5 meg ,this is because you will only get 8 meg if you live next door to your local exchange and you surf the net at 4am in the morning on a
website no one uses
there are a few checks you can try also, first go to run and type cmd and press return,in the command prompt window type this ping www.yahoo.co.uk > return ,this will give you a speed test of your line, what the ping test does is send 4 packets of data to the web site you enter, this can be any website, and then return a average speed, anything below 40 m/sec (milliseconds) is good ,but anything above 100m/sec is not very good
also if you are usng a usb connection to connect your hub/router to your p.c try using a ethernet connection instead, this is much better than usb,as ethernet sends data at 128mb/sec
also try borrowing or buying a different router, and test it on your line ,as it may be your router that is defective, and all you need to do is contact bt and get them to send a new router out, they are quite cheap to buy ,i know pc world are doing a sale at the moment and selling linsky routers for £39
i am quite supprised at bt as they are normally quite good,ok you may pay a few quid more than other isp,s but i reckon their service is what you pay for
if you continue to get speed problems with your connection, contact bt,and heres a tip,if you get diverted to india, make out you are deaf and shout "i dont understand you,i am hard of hearing" and they will divert you to a call center in the uk
good luck

I have the same problem.
In fact it was faster when I had the 1mb conection.
Phoning bt seems to be a wast of time. No one cares.
The answer is simply not to use bt broadband. Its been the worst thing I ever did.
