I just called my doctor and asked if I needed to come in for a pregnancy blood test. I took a home bought test and it came out positive, the department said that if it was positive there was no need for a blood test. My question is, what can I expect from the very first doctor visit? Will they need to draw blood to determine how far along I actually am?

For mine, they did a pap, then checked that the uterus felt like it was the right size. We discussed my history and I think that's about it. E-pregnancy.com is a great site for more info. on pregnancy. Good luck!

Hi there and congrats! This is your first baby I assume?

With my first pregnancy, I took about 5 pregnancy test and so the doctor said there was no need to do a blood pregnancy test. On my first visit, I signed a whole bunch of papers giving the doctor permission to do a whole bunch of testing. I got my blood drawn and then the hubby and I had a chance to ask questions. That was it! The first ultrasound will usually determine how far along you are, and I got my first one at about 8 weeks. You'll see a blob then! Exciting! And you'll also have the chance to see the heart beat and hear it, if your doctor so chooses to use a dopler.

I am pregnant again, and this time I don't have to go in so early. My first appointment for this 2nd pregnancy is when I'm about 8 weeks and that is to due an ultrasound.

Here is how my first visit go
Filling out paper work and family history
sonogram to find out how far along I am (some doctors due not do this)
peeing in a cup checking sugar and protein levels
pap smear it check for infections, STDs (it is required now days even if you are happily married) and to make sure everything looks alright down there (checking the cervix and walls)
blood tests for different things I really don't remember exactly what I think Group B strep, and STDs blood wise.

I think that is basically it, you will probably have time to ask questions and address any concerns. I suggest having a list so that you don't forget questions you wanted to ask.

Doc SHOULD take an in office pregnancy urine or blood test to confirm the pregnancy. With my prenatal care, they make sure you are at least 6 weeks along, then do a vaginal ultrasound to make sure there is a viable pregnancy(make sure something is actually there, with a heartbeat). They will determine how far along you are via the ultrasound and your first day of your last period. They will also make you fill out lots of papers on your medical history. And yes, they will take about 4-6 vials of blood and run many tests. Good luck and Congrats!!

When I went for my first OBGYN visit, they did an ultrasound to see how far along I was. I also sat with the head Dr. and he talked to me about what was ahead as far as the pregnancy goes. Oh yeah, and the first ultra sound they do is with a wand and they put it inside you, so don't expect the one on your belly.
If you have issues with getting your blood drawn, be prepared for getting it done a lot in the months ahead. I hate needles and wasn't prepared for that aspect of the Dr. visits.
So, your first OBGYN visit will be more like a consultation, probably with either a urine test or an ultrasound or both.

At your first visit to your doctor, you will be weighed, check the blood pressure, then the doc will ask some questions about when you last menstrated and then will be able to tell you aprox. haw far along you are. The blood work wont usually be until you are 20wks. And this is check a number of things like diabeaties during pregnancy. It does not hurt and you will be fine. Just make sure you ask your doc any questions that you have and if you don't want to talk to him you can email me at any time

On my first visit I had an ultrasound done and we heard the baby's heart beat, and the doctor checked her measurements, (I was 6 weeks pregnant). I've learned from others that most people don't get u/s done that early, so I think I just got lucky. I didn't need a pap done because I had recently had a normal one.

Oh & I also had blood drawn for various tests.

First of all, you will fill out a stack of papers asking health and family history questions. They will take about an hour to do a physical exam and ask you questions about your history as they go over the paperwork with you.

They will do a complete physical gynecological examination including breast exam, pap smear and pelvic exam. They take tissue samples to check for STD's including HPV, etc.

They will feel your uterus, check your reflexes, your eyes, your lungs, your ears and all that good stuff. They will give you a urine test to test for sugars and protein in the urine. They will also take about 6 or 7 vials of blood. They will test your blood for all the regular stuff including blood cell count, thyroid and blood sugar. They also test for AIDS and genetic diseases to see if you are a carrier for things such as Cystic Fibrosis, Tay-Sacs disease and (sickle-cell anemia if you are black). Some doctors check your hormone level.

It's nothing to be concerned about. You can get to know your provider and see if you like him or her. Just think of it as a major physical on steroids!!! :)~

They may draw your blood but it won't be to determine how far along you are. They will do that by asking you questions about your last period. They will also review things you can/cannot eat and remind to to take your prenatal vitamin everyday. You will receive plenty of literature to read about pregnancy. Remember to bring your list of questions to your appointment and ask away!
Congrats!
