If she can get pregnant, it will probably be safe. Irregular periods are sometimes a sign of infertility, but not always (actually not in most cases). But really the only person who can answer your question with any certainty is your sister's doctor, after the doctor has done a complete physical, possibly including a pap smear and blood tests. Any woman who is sexually active should have regular check ups and pap smears, anyway, even if she's not planning on getting pregnant.

Does she have any eating disorders or disordered eating patterns? I had this problem when I was in high school because I did not eat normally (generally I only ate at night).

Girls that have a very low percentage of body fat are also at a higher risk of irregular periods because the fat produces estrogen which is a hormone required for balancing the menstral cycle.

If she is a healthy, normal weight and an active, in shape 18 year old then it would be best if she consulted a gynocologist to further research the reasons she is having an irregular period. Obviously if this continues it will be harder for her to get pregnant because it will be difficult for her to track when she is ovulating.

It's probably nothing. A lot of girls who aren't on birth control don't have regular periods. She should still go to a doctor just to be sure though if she feels something is wrong. She knows her body better than anyone else.

A young woman's period can get irregular at times.Tell her to have a pap smear at the health department to sooth her mind. But she'll find that irregulr periods are normal, but to play it safe, have it checked to see if it may be a sign of another problem.
