I totally believe that by helping someone else you are in turn helping yourself. I am studying to be a nurse and there are many days I've had, in the past, during clinicals that I really thought that I did not want to keep doing this. I got through the entire nurse aid thing and helped a lot of people at the nursing home. I know by their gratitude that I was doing the right thing for myself and for my family.
I also get to help a huge amount of people, and I think I really enjoy nursing as a career choice.

Maybe, but there's a huge difference between helping someone brilliant and capable to achieve and prosper and helping someone who's given up on life to have a hot meal and cot with a roof over their head for the night. There's also a slippery slope between altruism and sacrifice. One day you're giving a bum a dollar, the next day you're volunteering for a non-profit organization and wasting your talents, not producing, not enjoying yourself, and being a negative to the economy. The only reason someone would sign up for such a deal is their feeling of guilt, and I say it's undeserved guilt.
Bill Gates made a grave error recently when he donated to charity to help fight AIDS. He should've opened a for profit top scientific company to fight AIDS, one that hired the best, to create drugs to sell at the lowest prices viable, while still paying the big bucks to all involved in the research and running the company. That's how to fight AIDS. Not expect volunteers or guilty rich people to "do their best" to invent solutions.

In motivational circles, they are always saying, "You can have anything you want if you just help enough other people get what they want." And, I do believe that.

Most definately! I like to live my life by "paying ahead" or what ever it is called when you do a kindness for no reason at all.

Absolutely I do. And I have been doing it for many years through online peer work with people who have anxiety, panic and depression.
