One of the most tranquil and beautiful places you can go.
Bustling little town if you want shopping, but beautiful sandy beaches for peace and quiet.
There is a fabulous Ritz Carlton there I think. There was a small beach you could get out to for a quarter (5 years ago) and drive out--watch for incoming tides we almost lost our rental car. :-)
Try sea kayaking through salt marshes, there is a wildlife rehab place that is amazing and you can see beautiful birds and such that have been rescued--it is deep in the woods but findable--watch for utterly ferocious looking spiders and an attack turkey named Beethoven--if he's still around.
You'll love it, beautiful in every way. One kind of bad note is it is very close to a major air force base, so expect some noise.
Also, ask about swimming on the beaches on any given day, we didn't and were happy when someone pointed out to 2 huge sharks that had just been caught.
Have a great time!

The previous reply is right. It is one of the most beautiful places I have been to. A little pricey, so make sure you have some extra cash on hand. I went there last Christmas. I was expecting to lay on the beach, walk in the water. Was I wrong!! It was very windy and too chilly for a swimsuit. We did sit on the beach for a while and went for a nice long walk. Another place to visit is Honeymoon Island, around Clearwater. It is much more tranquil that Amelia Island and very remote. But, either way you look at it you see the ocean. That's the best part in my eyes. Have fun and enjoy yourself!!! Remember the sweater!

it's very low key. i hope you like to golf cause that's about all there is to do. you can go to fernandina it's an old shrimping town with some ok things to see. if you have a car you must go to big talbot island, as soon as you cross the bridge going south on a1a look on your left for a small parking lot, very easy to miss, you go in the parking lot and put a dollar in an envelope with your tag number for parking fee walk the trail to the beach and you will see the most awesome beach, one of the coolest i've ever seen and i've seen more than i can count. december is also a good month for surfing and the poles in hannah park in mayport is one of the best places to surf on the east coast. mayport is just across the ferry from fort george island south on a1a. bring a wetsuit though as the water starts to get cold in december. hope you have a great trip.
