Palm OS is the operating system on your handheld. Palm Desktop is a desktop application for your PC or Mac. They are not the same.
Palm OS: Every computer must have an operating system. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the touchscreen or writing area, sending output to the screen, and controlling basic functions. Just as Windows and Mac OS have different versions (Windows XP, Windows 2000, Mac OS X 10.3.2), the Palm OS version on your handheld may have a different number than the Palm OS version of a different model of handheld.
Unlike Windows or Mac computers, you can't upgrade the Palm OS version in your handheld. In the past, it was possible to change the Palm OS version, but today, Palm OS upgrades are rare, and they usually add functionality that's only relevant to a specific handheld. Major developments in hardware over the years have made it impractical to offer full upgrades of Palm OS version (such as upgrading from Palm OS 4 to Palm OS 5). Most Palm OS 5 handhelds feature an entirely new processor and architecture. The Palm OS 5 features would not be applicable to older hardware, or would be incapable of running efficiently.
Palm Desktop: When we say "Palm Desktop," we mean the application on your PC or Mac that keeps track of your Calendar, Contacts, To Do List and Memos. When you perform a HotSync operation, the information in Palm Desktop is compared with the information in your handheld, and made the same.
It gets a little complicated here, because HotSync Manager is integrated into Palm Desktop. HotSync Manager is a desktop component of Palm Desktop that coordinates the synchronization of information between your handheld and Palm Desktop on your PC or Mac. Additionally, the synchronization software for Windows contains two packages - you will get the option during installation to synchronize with Palm Desktop or Microsoft Outlook. If you choose the Microsoft Outlook option, Palm Desktop will still be installed on your PC, but it will not be connected to your handheld by synchronization; it will be a standalone application.
