I have to leave the country in a week for an emergancy. I can not take my five month strickly breastfed baby with me. There is just no way :( He has been on the breast his entire life. As I don't really pump that often he rarely has a bottle! I have tried to give him a bottle with formula in it but he doesn't want to take it. He has however before dranken a few oz of it. I am just scared he is going to flip when Im not here and is only few the formula. I can not pre pump enough to last while gone because I will be gone for 2 weeks!!! I just feel horrible having to ween him at all, but I need to return to America! Also should I pump while away?? If so what should I do with all that milk I will be pumping out? I don't want to waste any because I know its super good stuff....know of any legal good ways to ship it??

Wow, I really feel for you. Here are my thoughts:

1) Keep trying the formula- maybe he'll get used to it. Try mixing it with your milk, then weening the milk out of the formula.

2) At 5 months, he is technically ready to start some solids, so ask your DR about getting him some cereal.

3) I would pump while I was abroad, then freeze it and bring it back on ice. OR, depending on where you are going, there is a surprising need for donated breast milk for premature babies, so maybe you could donate it. But you need to pump to keep the milk flowing.

Good luck.

If you are leaving a 5 mos old for 2 weeks, trying to get him to return to nursing when you come back will be very difficult and may not work. I would try hard to find a way to either 1. not make the trip or 2. take the baby with you somehow. (A 5 mos old can fly in your lap.....no extra ticket needed.) You say an emergency....if it worth compromising your child's heath? (Which is what a quick and early weaning would do.) A 2 week separation at this age will be traumatic for both of you, nursing or not.

The bottom two links may be very helpful to you reguarding traveling with or without baby.

If you would like to continue breastfeeding when you get back then definatly keep on pumping while you are gone. Your supply will most likely decrease, but it is possible to get it back up when you get back to your baby. If you would like to stop you should definatly start by cutting out a feeding every day to every other day and start taking some benadryl if not allergic. It will help dry you out. Also stick some cold cabage leaves in your bra and keep replacing them when they get warm. The sulfur in the leaves is also a drying agent. Make sure you are not allergic and if you have questions you should definatly call your doctor and/or the baby's doctor.

Oh, I pay attention you sister. i eventually weaned my son off it at approximately 10 weeks reason I merely could not stand it anymore. I did it chilly turkey for sleep circumstances; the 1st time he cried it out for a pair hours yet he did finally doze off and every time after that it become much less. i might nevertheless use it sparingly if i become merely attempting to hold him out for a feeding and there become no threat of him falling asleep with it. At your toddler's age you're able to easily take it away as in case you on no account used it.

you will have to dry up iam afraid and as for weaning your baby at this age it is far to young, and could and will damage him mentally, you should start him on a bottle now asap ,he will eat when he is hungry but do not go back to the breast,to loose you and the breast both at the same time is just to much
