Some of the more recent studies seem to indicate that it's a combination of genetics plus prenatal exposure to stress hormones during the first trimester of gestation.
Apparently the genes allow the hormones to affect the fetal brain formation, in certain specific areas.
Still, this isn't something that's simple determinism. As mentioned before, identical twins are not always of the same orientation.
When I speak of orientation, I am speaking of which gender one is attracted to, not if you do or don't sleep with a particular gender.
Also, this expression is along a continuum. Some people being strongly attracted to their own gender, some to the opposite gender, and people who fall in between, with differing attractions to both genders.

I don't actually believe we're gay or straight from birth, that sexuality is somehow interwoven into the genes. I've seen too many switch-overs in life for that to be true. Sexuality, in my eyes, is something that forms over time, especially in childhood- as a complex mixture of your personality, likes and dislikes, your formative experiences, and so much more. It's not something you can consciously, willfullly change, so it's almost as if you were born with a gene, because it's not a "choice" as some say. You can't change your desires! That's what I think, at least.

At this point in time, it's not known whether sexuality is nature or nurture. it seem to be a combination of both.
Studies of identical twins raised apart, show that in about 65% of the cases, where one twin is found to be gay, the other is also. This suggest that there's a genetic component, but not totally genetic.
Read the book below. it gives a good survey of all sides of the picture. But don't hate yourself, you're not doing anything immoral!

yes people are born gay. If you are gay you have to many of the opposite sex cells in your body.

No, the "gay from birth" urban legend is just that, an urban legend. No truth to it whatsoever.

Maybe. I've liked girls sense I hit puberty, and I was always a tomboy.
