Open a blank document by clicking Start -> Run... -> type Notepad then hit enter.
Type anything you want.
Highlight what you typed by holding down the left mouse key and moving the cursor over your typed text (it should turn the backround blue and the text white of the highlighted items).
Put the cursor anywhere on this blue background/white text area and right-click.
Select copy or cut (depending on what you want)
Open another document and right-click anywhere on the screen and select paste.
This works on most Windows text areas, including Word or most items on the web (you can copy pics this way too).

.
The cut and paste function is the same for most ALL Operating Systems (OSes)
1. Highlight the item you want to copy.
You do this by dragging your cursor from top left to bottom right so the the image or text is highlighted (turned blue).
Then right click and select COPY.
Now, if it is just an image you can simply hold your cursor over it, and right click > and select COPY.
Now, the image or text, or both are sitting on your "virtual clip board" ... you can't see it
waiting to be pasted.
2. Go to the place you want to paste your material. Go into WORD or an email body, or other > left click in the blank area >
3. now, right click > and select PASTE.
It is that simple. Do it a few times. You'll be an expert in no time.

Since you are new to your computer
you should know there are specific instructions on HOW TO do many functions in your HELP menu for every program.
Open the program, like WORD, or PHOTO *, or EXCEL, and click on the top tool bar HELP button, and then ask the question.
On questions relative to your computer fixes
the path to HELP is
1. Go to bottom of monitor toolbar left START button and RIGHT click > then select EXPLORE
2. When the EXPLORE window opens
you will see two panels under the tool bar.
The left one is a tree of all your computer files
The right one will show what is in each file you click on.
Moving on to Help > on the top toolbar click HELP > then select Help and Support Center.
3. In the window Help and Support Center >
click INDEX
4, At the top on INDEX type in a key word for the function your want to get help.
OR peruse all the topics to get yourself familiar with your machine. Lots of goodies there.

I remember what it was like as a newbie.
I was afraid if I made a mistake, I'd blow up a program, and "fry" something.
Don't worry, there is ALWAYS "System Restore" that takes you to an earlier (prior screw-up) date. Cool tool.
In the meanwhile, please let me HIGHLY recommend my favorite book, just easy to understand (baboon proof ha ha ha ha)
"Internet for Dummies"
It teaches ! Love it

It's not window xp that governs how you cut and paste - this is just an operating programme. If you have Microsoft Office I suggest you go to this. Highlight the text you want to cut and press delete. To copy text press ctrl and C together to copy and ctrl and V together to paste this somewhere else. Hope this helps.

Some things will copy and some wont. Put your mouse pointer right before the words you want. Left-click and drag the mouse across the words. They will be hi-lighted...usually in blue. Put your mouse over the hi-lighted area, right-click and select 'copy' from the drop-down menu Now move the mouse-pointer over to where you want the words to go, right-click and click on 'paste' in the drop-down menu and the copied words will appear there. You can put copied words anywhere that you can type in text, like a form, an email or a text-editing program like 'Notepad'. You can copy web addresses (url's) and put them in the browser 'address bar' to visit a website, too.
