I would rather be very smart and have a few friends....oh, look at that, that's how it is for me already! heehee
Let's face it, in life, you really only have a few real friends. The rest are a lot of acquaintances that you have some things in common with and can have fun. But very few will be the ones who comfort you when you've found yourself in a corner and can't find your way home. A true friend will not only come and get you and lead the way, but she won't tell or chastise you for being so stupid to get lost in the first place.

I don't see why you can't be smart and have a large group of friends.
If you are one of these "gifted" people and you are wondering why
you don't have a large group of friends I would guess you would have to look no further then your social skills.
A lot of very bright people just don't get how to socially interact
with other people. I feel this is because when they were seen to be
above average in intelligence as a child. their well meaning parents went nuts on the kids academic studies, and almost completely stopped the peer group interaction that is so necessary for normal childhood development.
[all of which may be crap but you got to admit it sounds good]

I would rather be average & have the friends. I do have a lot of
friends. I am smart enough that I don't have to let my friends know it all the time. I have, a now, aquaintance, used to be a friend. None of my other friends can stand her. She always has to bring her intelligence into play. It is so much more fun to be able to relax & enjoy life isn't it?

I have VERY FEW due to my eliminating most. They were just not contributing to the friendship and it was time to move on.
Even today I have some people who call ME a friend but I would never consider them a friend. I use the word "aquaintence" for them.
I believe a friend is one who calls you just to see how you are. A friend is someone who asks you to go do something just to spend some time with you. These "aquaintences" have never done this which is why they are aquaintences rather than friends.
Choose your friends wisely for you become who you hang around!

If I had to choose it would be the smart friends because I want my friends to be able to talk about some serious things. Not all the time of course but I hate to to say something and they don't have a clue

I'd rather be smart. If you are smart, you realize that you have as many friends as you want or have time for. It's a lot of work to maintain any relationship, it just depends on our priorities
