I have a Direct TV HD DVR and yes it will let you play out to one tv and watch another live program, mine is set up to be able to be controlled simultaneously by two different tv's so that way each TV can act like they have a DVR, if I wanted, I could put that functionality into only one TV allowing me to record a program as I watch and record another, Direct TV will give you a manual that will explain how this works in greater detail or you can ask your tech who comes to hook up your system to get you set up.
