Wow. I have been there. Let me tell you, to find your show horses tail has been gnawed off by a filly, is not a fun experiance.

I ended up using Bitter Apple, a spray that trust me, tates bitter. It was designed for dogs, but can be crossed over to horses. The filly only tried to eat it once more, and then this wonderful habit "magically" stopped. The only inconvenience is that you have to spray it on almost every day.

Sometimes colts an dfillies and adult horses do this to each other be cause they are bored and have nothing else to do. I would suggest putting a stall ball out in pasture for them or you can spray a product called McNasty's anti chew spray. It works very well and wont harm the horses. You can buy the spray at any tack store.

You know how people put on gross tasting nail polish to break the habit of biting nails? Perhaps there is something you could put on the colts tail that tastes bad, so they don't want to eat it. Other than that, I don't think there's much you can do abou it. On the farm I used to work at the calves were always sucking each other when weaning. They grew out of it eventually.

Perhaps you could contact a breeder...I'm sure that they've dealt with this.

My only other suggestion is to wrap the tail. I don't know where you live - if you're still dealing with flies in your area. If you are, you could wrap most of the tail, leaving a little to swish. If you don't have to worry about flies right now, then wrap the whole thing.

Use "flex" wrap (the kind that sticks to itself). Braid the "loose" hair at the base of the tail bone, tuck it up, then wrap it with the flex wrap. If the other horse is eating even the top, wrap that too.

*** Do NOT wrap too tightly, and don't leave that wrap on for more than two weeks. Re-wrap after removing old wrap, brushing out tail and re-braiding.

Hope this helps...

Foals explore their world with their mouths. Others foals tails are conveninet. Get some Bitter Apple spray. You can buy this at most pet stores. Non-toxic and tastes terrible. Spray their tails to make them less appetizing
