The cedar chest I have is old. I'm going to paint it and put blankets in it and it doesn't have a cedar smell any more.

A good first step would be to get one of those foam-based sanding blocks at about 200 grit. Then carefully sand the interior of the chest. Usually it is only the surface that has lost its aromatic oils and that could open the surface with a new layer and save you going to the trouble of re-cedaring. Try one area and if it seems to be working do it all and then wipe dust off with damp cloth.

They also sell cedar blocks (about 1x2x2) that you could just drop into the chest with the blankets to restore the cedar smell.

Go to the local lumber yard and buy 1/4 inx4x8 sheet of cedar closet lining. It is cheap and easy, and it has the cedar smell and keeps moths away.

You can bring the cedar smell back by lightly sanding it.
