I find a job that perfectly matches my qualities and professional experience. Very confident in my chances, i apply. They call me, ask a few questions relevant to the position, and invite me for an interview which consists of a translation test (from and into English), and an Excel exercise. I do very good on both, they tell me they will call later on to give me an answer.

I think that the interview went very well, they seemed to be quite happy with my salary expectations, and my profile matched the ideal candidate. They don't call, not even to say I didn't get the job.

What went wrong?

It could be any number of things. If they had a lot of candidates apply you may have been competing on a differnt level. More and more often companies are not only looking for the skill sets and the pay grades they are looking for people that will fit in with the organizations "culture". It could be a personality thing.You should call the person that set you up for the interview and politely ask why you were not chosen..State that you were under the impression that you performed well during the interview process and you would just like to know from them what you could have done better if anything. Explain that you are in the process of interviewing and you would like to take a key learning away from the experience that you had witht he company.

I can give the standard HR/Caeer Counselor response and say that you should always send an immediate “Thank you” letter to the person(s) who you interviewed with that reiterates the key topics brought up in the interview and focuses on your strengths. That’s the typical response and even that won’t guarantee anything.

Fact of the matter is companies have the upper hand on the candidates they interview and don’t feel obligated to act morally and responsibly the vast majority of the time. If their numbers say they don’t have anything gain by informing you one way or another, there’s a good chance they won’t.

Out of about 25 serious interviews I went on over the course of a year, I was contacted only once about not getting the position.

You can keep asking yourself, “what went wrong” but you’ll find that the majority of the time nothing really went “wrong”. You can’t be sure what their agenda is, how many candidates they have lined up, or who they have in mind as an ideal candidate. If you didn’t make any perceivable mistakes during the interview, then whatever the reason for you not getting the job was theirs.

There went wrong. That's normal, sometimes places have vast amount of candidates and they just want to make sure they have the right candidate. Sometimes, that's happen to me. Don't give up! You can call them and ask them have they fill the position and let them know that you are very interested in the position. Was the job through an employment agency?

Probably nothing. They may just have found a personality in someone else that is a better fit for them.

It disturbs me that you can get so close, then not even a phone call. I'm ok with rejection, but at least let me know. I've been to the point that it looks so promising that I quit looking, then NOTHING! Big letdown.

You should always call them back, just to confirm you are still intreseted in the job or to just follow up. However do not call a bunch of times.

Why do you think you didn't get the job then? Perhaps there are many applicants for more than one opening.
