There is no way of answering this because there is no average human. People in third world countries know less than people in developed countries, therefor their word base would be lower.
If you keep it to the US, you have to deal with regions, education level, and most important: age.
You need to be more specific, but if this is for an interview and you need an answer, I'd say 15,000.
Here's a breakdown:
Assume US college educated grad knows 20,000 words.
Assume 25% of all Americans are college grads.
Assume US population is 300,000,000.
Assume World's population is 6 billion.
Assume the rest of the world is not as smart as Americans.
My brain just exploded.

It depends on various factors, such as the person's age, how many languages they know, and there general intelligence. For instance, I'm 24 and know English fairly well, and some Spanish, and a couple words in other languages. As such, I probably know more words than another 24 year old who only knows English.
I don't know if there is an average is to how many words a human being knows. If there is one, I don't know what it is.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

diverse languages has diverse quantity of words the language that has the most words is the united statesEnglish because we save on including slang words to the dictionary besides the undeniable fact that the language shake spear used had even extra words different languages like English U.ok. and French purely have like 100 000-2 hundred 000 words we've about 500 000 and shake spear had about 500 000 (i'm not thoroughly confident those numbers are the finest option i purely bear in mind my instructor speaking about this in college)

Between 20 to 25,000
That's bast on Shakespeare having a vocabulary of 30,000 words.
But it might be around 35,000, with all modern day words like PC, CD and hoover (not very modern but you get what i mean.)
