Younger people are afraid to be their true selves. Older people are tired of trying to please others.

Younger people are too obsessed with appearance to consider being genuine to their sense of self. True maturity is just not giving a damn. I think everyone would be eccentric if they weren't so terrified of other people's perceptions.

you are correct in phrasing your words that way "usually" cause i'm an exception.
i used to be eccentric as a kid, and in my teens, and even early twenties, and sometimes, when i'm home alone and the moon is out and i've got a nice bottle of hot stuff all to myself...
i can say that for myself, i never cared what people thought, i used to sometimes swap shoes with my best friend at school and wear unmatching pairs, as did she, jsut for a laugh, i wore different socks and sometimes, differently matched shoes, and my hair...well, ask my mum, i never wanted her to dress me since i was a few years old, or do my hair, she had hell to pay if she tried.
i am highly intelligent, and i am a talented artist (so i'm told) ...i sometimes feel like an oddball in the world cause most people are so selfish and up their own a$ses they dont stop long enough to notice that if we stop being intolerant, selfish and egotistic, the world would be far more progressed...what's more, our most marginilized in society become a problem / burden to us if we dont help them up. (a chain is only as strong as its weakest link?)
eccentricity, i'm not sure if i understand it the same way as you, but, if it means i approach life differently, be it my clothes, my ideas and beliefs, then hell yeah, label me all you like

younger people try to fit in with 'whatever' crowd. Even if it's a crowd of misfits. Older people that are eccentric have stopped caring what other people think.

I don't care about what you think , I will go to the front when the bands on , I will dance holding my jd n coke , I will have as much to drink as I want , I will have as much fun as I want , I don't care what anyone thinks , do you know why? everyone is eccentric, but it's only older people who are completley comfortable with who they are, therefore not trying to hide there eccentricities for fear of being thought of as odd

Sometimes eccentricity borders on madness, when you consider what some older people have had to endure in their lives it is harldy surprising they sometimes get a little eccentric or even mad.

There is an instinct to follow the herd in young people and they do not like to stray from the norm for fear of being ridiculed. Older people have had time to develop their own individuality and are less concerned about breaking certain taboos. Having said this it may be that life has warped them progressively...

Because the older you get, the more you realise that young people are a pain in the a** and it forces you to act in an eccentric manner (really!)

The older one gets the more one realizes that the opinions of others don't matter much...we start ignoring the sense of conformity that pervades us so strongly as teenagers and learn to just be ourselves. Interestingly, yes, there are some strange birds out there.

Because you lose your inhibitions about behaviour as you get older and stop caring what people think about you so much! And also because it tends to be exageratted a little bit by stuff that happens in old age like mild memory loss etc.
