In statistics the five number summary consists of:

*the minimum (smallest observation)
*the lower quartile or first quartile (which cuts off the lowest 25% of the data)
*the median (middle value)
*the upper quartile or third quartile (which cuts off the highest 25% of the data)
*the maximum (largest observation)

To find these values organize the data in numerical order. The first quartile is the median of the numbers before the median. So it maks off 1/4 of the data. The third quartile is the same but with the numbers after the median. I'll do the first example but you have to do the second...okay?

1) 1, 2, 4, 5, 5, 7, 7, 8, 8, 8, 9

The minimum is 1.
The median is 7.
The first quartile is 4 (you find the median of the first half of the data: 1, 2, *4*, 5, 5
The third quartile is 8 (you find the median of the second half of the data: 7, 8, *8*, 8, 9
The maximum is 9

Hopefully you understand now...try to do the second one. Good luck! ;-)
