I'm sure you'll enjoy it once you get the hang of it. My grandmother taught me when I was 7 and I still enjoy crocheting.
The reason they're saying it's easier is probably because it's only one needle instead of two. Knitting is not that hard, since all the stitches are based on one of two basic ones: knit or purl.
Here are a couple of good resources. About.com has a phenomenal amount of information about learning to crochet, stitch patterns, etc. and Annie's Attic is good because it actually has short videos of how the stitch is done.
Enjoy!

Try to find someone that knows how to crochet and have them show you how to do it. IMHO, it's easier to watch someone else do it and learn hands on.
I had my mom teach me and I can tell you....there are still times when I still go to her for help. Sometimes the way patterns are worded it can get really confusing and it helps to have someone else walk you through a certain stitch or part of a pattern that's proving to be a pain in the neck.
All you need to get started is a crochet hook....I use the Susan Bates brand...and some yarn. You can buy either balls or skeins. I prefer to work with skeins. You can get supplies at Michael's or Joann's or pretty much almost any craft store you can think of. Also, Walmart carries yarn and it's sometimes cheaper buying there than a craft store.
Have fun learning!

The obvious difference is that you only use one hook to crochet while in knitting you use two needles. I do both.and find that generally crocheting goes faster and works well for hats, scarves and afghans. Knitting usually works out better for sweaters. You can find inexpensive books or magazines at most craft shops that sell yarn that will give you beginner instructions, with diagrams. I would recommend that as a beginner you try using worsted weight yarn and a size g or f hook, that will be easy to work with. Good luck and have fun!

I taught myself how to crochet last year. I went to Walmart and got a book titled "teach yourself to crochet". It also came with needles and everything else you need to get started. I made 2 scarves and a blanket last winter. They turned out really good.

It is very easy. You really need 1 hook and a ball of yearn to get started. I've found some good and easy patterns on the web.
Also, many craft stores have classes, so you could sign up for one of those...
