Gently place the back of your hand against the door. If the door is hot, withdraw your hand and choose another exit. If the door is not hot, place the palm of your hand upon the outside of the door handle and proceed to wrap your fingers around it while keeping your palm in place. Generally, a smooth but firm twist of your wrist in a clockwise direction will pull the lock or latch inside of the mechanism back. With your hand remaining in this position, pull the handle slowly back towards you (or press inwards) to encourage the door to open.
Please note, this proceedure will not work with a locked door or an automatic door.
