Ok so pretend you never heard Metallica (or any late 80's metal band) and you hear them on the radio (because they still play metallica and Megadeth on our rock station) would you right away know it was old music, or do you think that the music they did is 'timeless'. I just wondered what people would think that has never heard the music, I dont think there is any comparing todays heavy metal to the late 80's early 90's. Any thoughts?

I do think that Metallica's first 4 albums, Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets & ...And Justice For All (and maybe incl. the Black Album) have what you could call a timeless quality about them, in that they have aged well and are still nearly as potent today as when they came out. That said, Metallica was at the (commercial) forefront of classic thrash throughout the 80's and that aligns them with a time and place that probably won't be repeated.

Modern metal (including post-Black Album Metallica) has built itself on the foundation laid by what has come before it. This starts arguably with Black Sabbath, moves to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and then into Classic Thrash and then onward, so by design modern metal, while have greater production value, is derivative and often lacking any unique qualities of their own.

Is there any hope? Is there anything comparable in quality to 80s metal? Yes! and now with so many options available for small bands to circumvent major labels and still get their music heard, you have access to untold amounts of music, but you do have to sift through a ton of mediocrity to find the gems that challenge the current bounds of originality and suit your taste...but really that has been the case since the beginning of Rock 'n' Roll. Good Luck!

Depends what Metallica era you're talking about....
If you go back to Kill Em' All i would call it old school thrash. But anything else after that pretty mush sounds like modern rock/metal.
My personal faves are Justice and Master. :o)

Because today's rock/metal is crap, I would probably know that it came from 10-20 years ago.

yes, I'm pretty sure i would recognize it was from10-25 years ago. the good thing about music is that although the style and genre is always changing, its still timeless!
