Oh yes, it is most definately being abused! I feel that if you want to work and 'try' to take care of your family you should be able to get some help with groceries and electric bills etc. Even that should be limited to 1 or 2 years. But if you are just sitting around at home, eating ice cream and watching tv all day and not trying, you should be taken off immediately! That is not the original way the welfare system was set up. It was made to help people in need. I see way too many well-bodied people at the grocery store with their little EBT debit card. Usually they have gold jewelry on and the latest and greatest tennis shoes & fashions.
I think with all the illegals coming into our country that eventually the Welfare system is going to crash and burn. It can't sustain much longer. Which is a sad thing for those who just need a 'hand up' not a hand out!

In my city I know of a grand mother (mother of 8) 3 daughters(all unmarried with 11 children between them ) & 4 grand daughters( unmarried,5 children) living in the same federal housing complex. Yes that is abusing the system I am paying for these people to do nothing but have babies. I had to pay with no help to raise my 3 children. Why should I pay to bring up theirs. Have they not heard of BIRTH CONTROL?

there are people who deserve some temporary assistance. you should go on welfare as a last resort, and work to get off of it. the problem is too many people get comfortable with free money. there is a lot of fraud out there.
it stinks because there are many success stories of people who really needed help and used it and then worked up and got off it.

All programs social or not are abused. It's a given....there's nothing that's "abuse-proof".
I think the Social Services Program is much better than it was say 10 years ago.
Is there room for improvement.....certainly.

its a lifesaver for those who need some assistance in time of need... and yes its being abused... many are just living off the checks and complain about how life sucks, when they dont have a job

Something is wrong when third and fourth generations of the same family are on the dole.
That certainly isn't temporary help through a difficult time!
