He uses the van a couple of times a month to get his band to shows. I think it uses about i quart per tank of gas. Since this is such a low use vehicle would it not be OK to just conyinue to add oil? I crank every day or so just to keep everything lubed.

What is the other option? rebuilt motor at $3000, including installation? buy your son a case of oil and put it in the back of the van

I agree with the previous poster to change the PCV valve. I had an S-10 blazer years ago that was drinking oil (although I didn't notice blue smoke in the exhaust) and that didn't *totally* stop it but *greatly* reduced it.

If blows blue smoke, then you can take note of when to try to rough-guess where the problem is.

If it blows a puff on start up, and/or when you gear down (let off the gas and decelerate/engine brake) and it smokes more then, it could be leaking around the valve stems.

If it smokes more upon acceleraton, it is more likely to be rings. I would also try a compression check. Compression checkers are cheap.

I would first have to ask does the vehicle smoke any at all if the answer is no then I would check for leaks around the valve covers and also the front timing covers and oil pan this much consumption coming around the pistons would definitly leave a smoke trail .The fact that it is a low use vehicle I wouldn't worry about it to much unless the performance has dropped off. The fact that you start it and run it every day is good ,just letting one set is bad for them.

The transmission is bolted to the back end of the engine. The force shaft to the rear wheels comes out the back of the transmission. The impartial protection/back up easy change is on the driving force's section merely above the rear corner of the transmission pan. It has a plug with 3 wires plugged into it. The outer wires are for the back up lights, the interior cord is grounded in park or impartial to end the relationship so which you will initiate the engine. possibility is the linkage is worn and not permitting the change to floor. verify that first through fact in all my years of engaged on Dodges, I truthfully have fixed greater wiped out linkage than switches. BTW you like a particular socket to get rid of the change.

Probably needs work (head gasket, rings, I'm no expert), but if he uses the thing sparingly and remembers to check and adjust the oil level EVERY time he starts it, it should be okay. Just no long trips!

And make sure he has a working cellphone.

Find out where it's going. If it's the 5.9 engine, they blow the rear main seals a lot, but it's actually not that much trouble to pull the transmission and replace it from the outside.

IT SOUNDS LIKE A VEHICLE I HAD MANY YEARS AGO.IT WILL USE MORE AS TIME GOES ON AND ALL OF A SUDEN WILL MORE THAN LIKELY THROW A ROD.THE HEAVY USE IS LIKELY THE RINGS ARE WORN OR MAYBE EVEN BROKEN. might just be bad pcv valve. i would just change oil & filter use 5 quarts good quality oil & 1 quart lucas oil stabilizer.
