May I assume you know how to do shadow play (point source light, fabric choices etc)?

I think the key would be to make the silhouette of a skyline or some architectural shapes, it'd be easy to cut them into pieces so they looked whole at first and then falling apart during the earthquake.

Depending on the sophistication of your audience, you might even shake your theater or simply scream "earthquake!"
