There is no specific "etiquette" required...altough talking whilst the acts are playing is considered very ignorant and rude.
If you want to eat rather than just have a drink, its always best to book ahead.

Just call up and reservie a table. And then wet yourself in frustration when you find you've nooked for a 'progressive' jazz night...

No you don't need to bother about booking with a lot, just turn up and you will be fine. Just be wary about some very popular places as you may be waiting outside for awhile. Ring ahead to get a reservation.
