Would a Hindu boy / man wearing a shikha (also called choti – a long tied tuft of hair on the back of the head) and normal everyday clothes be looked upon as a ultra-conservative (also called not up-to-date) ? Please keep in mind that boys / men of the Sikh community wearing turbans are accepted like any other person while the turban gives them a Sikh identity. Also a Muslim boy / man wearing long clothes and short hair with white cap is also accepted and gives them their respective identity. Would you look upon a Hindu boy / man wearing a long tied hair on the back of the head as “out of the groove”?

well at the first look it may seem that the boy may not be up to date in the social world but i for 1 would definately would like to have a word with him and find out is he really that way or just wanna be out of the crowd and stand bold to what he wants and is he intellectual that is what will count the most, irrespective of his look

No, I would not. As you said it is a showing of their religion. I consider someone having a lot of piercings an tattoos to be more out of the grove.
