People have a work personality and then their real personality. They are just trying to get along with people that they don't really like and suck up to the boss.

Probably to keep the peace and get along with others. If someone said something they thought was funny, I wouldn't want to offend someone by keeping a straight face. There's no harm in a little fake laugh.
