4 and 12:

2 x 12 = 24
24 - 4 = 20

x+y=16
2x-y=20

So,

x = 16-y
Substitute...
2(16-y) - y = 20
Distribute
32 -2y - y = 20
Move y's right and numbers left...
12 = 3y
divide out
4 = y
substitute back in
x + y = 16
x + 4 = 16
x = 12

x = 12 and y = 4

Alternatively, you could just add the two equations together:

x + y = 16
2x - y = 20
-----------------
3x + 0y = 36

3x = 36
x = 12
12 + y = 16
y = 4

2x-y=20
add the 2 equations together....
x+y+2x-y=16+20
3x=36
x=12
12+y=16
y=4
