That all depends upon what you want? Do you want Solid Marble Countertops in the kitchen, or do you want formica? Do you want Italian Ceramic Tile or linoleum on the bathroom floors? Do you want the solid Maple cabinets, or is the pressboard with vinyl finish just dandy with you? And How about those windows? Andersen Double Hung with Vinyl Clad exterior, and wood interior? Brass Hardware? Miami-Dade Approved Cat-5 Impact Resistant Glass? Single Glazed? Double Glazed? Low-e coating? Tint? Screens? Or will the Millworks Brand be just fine? And What About The Roof? Asphalt Shingles? Clay Tile? Metal?

Do you own the lot outright, or are you putting that into the equation as well? Are you looking for someone to build something to your specifications, on your location, or are you looking for a complete package that someone else is going to build to their specifications on a lot that they own?

Expect closer to 60-80$ per square foot, even with the slump the tri-county is in right now. Possibly more or less, depending on the specific area. That's roughly the property value per square foot the engineering firm I work for is engineering homes for right now, give or take. Delray is pretty built-out, so expect some difficulty finding land and prices on the higher side. Forget Boca Raton (between Boynton and Delray). It's not worth living there. Boynton is still fairly open towards the northern Boynton area, so you may be able to find something there. Don't rule out the Wellington area if you're commuting to West Palm. Even if you're commuting to N. Ft. Lauderdale, Wellington isn't too bad. Centex is eating up as much property as they can, so if you find something, close on it quickly.

If you're looking just to retire, I strongly recommend the Port St. Lucie / Jupiter / Melborne area. Beautiful area that isn't over built yet. The Treasure Coast is spectacular and the land prices are much more fair.
