Zero. If they would like money then I suggest that they get a job.

In America, maybe a dollar. I know there are soup kitchens and homeless shelters here - in fact I volunteer for the food bank. Usually I don't give one on one because I don't want the money used for drugs.

If I'm in a third world country where there are no such things available I am more generous.

Average, probably $5. But I also buy a lunch and drop it to "my homeless guy" on my way home from work a couple of days a week. He likes turkey on rye. Lunches usually run about $6.

Oh, I also keep hats, mittens, and scarves that I knit and hand them out. I don't like being approached (I mean, who does) and having my "space" invaded. So I keep the knit stuff on hand so I can pass it out and get away from the confronation while giving something useful. Plus, it's COLD here...imagine, people standing in the street with no hats or mittens in the winter in BOSTON!!

I don't have an 'average'. I try to discern the need for it. Someone sitting on the sidewalk in front of a liquor store holding an empty cup in one hand and a paper-wrapped pint in the other gets nothing, but I've given up to $50 to people who appear to be truly in need. I'm someone who will actually talk to the person who is asking for money and not just react to the request for spare change.

Nothing. I work hard for my money ... plus I have a significant disability. If I can work, so can they. Hell, one homeless person that I know of has degrees ... yet chooses to live on the streets and beg for money from others. We all have our problems in life ... it's how we CHOOSE to solve those problems, that makes the difference in how we survive.

Usually I say sorry I don't have any. If I do it is just pocket change. I never pull out my wallet because then they ask I see a five in there can I have that. short simple phrases seem to work. I never want to engage them. Such as saying oh I only have a twenty.

About 5 dollars. But I don't anymore because I recently learned that in my city, you can get in trouble for giving people money when they are begging on the streets.

1$ to 5$, I feel guilty doing it because it is enabling and when I lived in Las Vegas I saw where the money went. I'm just a sucker with neon lights!
