I am responding to this question from Mississippi.
I lived through Katrina. This storm was so huge and
the devastation was so massive I firmly believe that
if the Democrats had been in control the reaction would have been nearly the same. No one was prepared
for amount of destruction Katrina left behind. That
storm overwhelmed all levels of the government. The
knee jerk reaction was in response to the media's
coverage of the storm. Not the storm itself. Both
governors were yelling for help for their state.
Lousiana was just louder than our governor. Katrina
united both parties for a while. The nation came together and reached out to us. The final nail in the Republican party was Iraq and the lies. If Bush
had managed to find Bin Laden the Democrats might
not have had such a easy victory.

Katrina showed failiures on all levels of government, not just the Feds, and certainly not just the Repooplicans. With several days notice, the governor had no evac plan. The mayor left a thousand school busses in parking lots, rather than using them to get poor folks out of the Ninth Ward. The governor practically had a panic attack, complaining how overwhelming the crisis was.
Let's compare the reaction to Katrina too, say, the reaction to the attacks on the WTC:
NY: Attacked by two airplanes, no warning
NO: Attacked by hurricane, three days warning.
NY: Acts of terror
NO: Act of G-d
NY: Towers designed to withstand heats which were exceded by fires.
NO: Officials warned for years that levees would break.
NY: People rally together.
NO: People leave.
NY: Emergency personnel rush into the towers to save as many lives as possible. Over 400 die.
NO: Emergency personnel rush to get out of town.
NY: Some looting, limited to Downtown Manhattan, culprits dealt with swiftly
NO: Looting so widespread that police were ordered to suspend search-and-rescue efforts to deal with the looters.
NY: 2749 deaths (2602 in towers, 147 on airplanes)
NO: 1577 deaths statewide
NY: Mayor Giuliani and Governor Pataki work 24-hours a day for a week to organize rescue efforts, clean up, comfort the people
NO: Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco work to cover their asses and blame others
NY: All remnants of WTC cleared from Ground Zero within 9 months. PATH station reopenes in summer 2003.
NO: Flooded cars, destroyed homes still remain.
NY: Argue *how* to rebuild Lower Manhattan
NO: Argue *whether* to rebuild city
BTW, the governor of Louisiana and the mayor of New Orleans are both Democraps. Their "true colors" were shown, as well as that of Bush & Co.

What the response to Katrina showed and still shows it that foreign oil means more than the everyday American. One months budget from the Iraqis War along with every military engineer could have fixed the levees at least by now, another month's budget would have fixed most of the areas still affected. It is a shame that over a year later, that many ares still have people living in trailers and levees in New Orleans not even back to pre-Katrina strengths. Thankfully no hurricane hit the area this past season, at least there is still another 8 months or so until the next season to work on the remaining problems. Shame on those in charge...

It definitely did. The last Republican to do anything to help African Americans was Lincoln (and in his heart, he did not even want to end slavery). It goes to show where there priorities lie. Look at Iraq. No one will say Hussein was a great guy but why has nothing been done to stop the violent killing of children in Africa by these blood diamond gangs? Don't tell me race has nothing to do with it. I wonder if it had been rich Jewish people left with no homes in say, Miami would the response have been so shabby? Doubtful. I don't even like Kanye West (who,by the way, has a song called "Sierra Leone diamonds" and does not even mention the atrocities that occur there to get the diamonds!) but he said it right : "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

Didn't Katrina also show the true character of the democratic mayor Nagin when he did nothing to prepare the city or the democratic governor Blanco who did nothing except wait for federal relief. Keep blaming the Federal government and President Bush for everything that is wrong, if it makes you feel better in your little world you live in.

On the contrary, I think it brilliantly showcased the idiology of the Democratic Party in the form of the Mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Louisiana. The City of New Orleans was given a federal grant consisting of a huge amount of money to shore up the levy system after the Army Corps of Engineers determined that they would fail in a major flood event and instead, that hand-picked genius of a Democrat spent the money on freakin' TOUR BUSSES. The nitwit Governor let him get away with this, and to compound the mismanagement, THE SAME NITWITS ALLOWED THE BUSSES TO BE DESTROYED BY LEAVING THEM IN A FLOOD ZONE.
I think your jerkin' more than your knees when you make obtuse statements like the one you made. When will you Democrats start telling the TRUTH?

Absolutely, it decided it all for me, especially when they still gloat over the disaster and the people that were killed and displaced across America. New Orleans is one of Americas oldest City's and should be preserved with it's heritage and history. I lived in Texas and went to Marti Gra several times, and the Southern people despise Cajuns, I believe this had a lot to do with why they wouldn't support them when the chips were down.

The governor and mayor, who did NOTHING to help their own people are most responsible for the lack of preparation. Texas was more than ready and even ready enough to help ou tthe Katrina victims.
You don't get to blame that on Republicans.
