Well, generally the postman just gives it to me. But someone has to print all those adds, someone has to create and approve the design, someone has to make the paper, someone has to recycle it for the postman who happened to leave it in their box....probably a good 10k...?

Your question cannot be answered directly in this forum. Too many variables.
If you go to this web link:
http://www.valpak.com/vpcol/advertise.do
You will find phone and e-mail links to call them directly.
Expenses for online versus snail mail will be different.
A significant portion of the expense will be the target population you seek.
They advertise or target based on zip code.
A city of 10,000 is going to be much less expensive to target than a city of 100,000. Same holds for the population in a given zip code. Will also be affected by how many households they target in the market area. Some may be removed from their lists, others may have completed questionaires and may be part of a "focus group" or target demographic you might want to either specifically avoid or target.
In short - Contact Valpak directly.
Now then:
You can use a feature in the supplied weblink for Valpak to see if they specifically target a zip code of interest or if their "database" is only generic to a "larger region" that then "includes" your area or areas of interest.
As such my "zipcode" is not listed as a target for their marketing but I do receive Valpak advertising and larger cities in my area are part of their database.

The valpak envelope has a phone number on it for contact if you are interested in advertising. Try contacting them.. I'm sure there is a standard rate for design and then a piece rate for the mailing area that you choose to go into
