It's a sympathetic reaction that makes them contagious. A yawn happens when your body is not receiving enough oxygen. You yawn when someone else yawns because of this sympathetic reaction. Mythbusters did an experiment on this topic on one of their shows.

A yawn is a way of getting more oxygen to the brain, when you see someone yawn your sub-conscience interprets this as oxygen running out and so you begin to yawn as well.

I yawned just reading the question. My oxygen levels must have been going low because Ive been on here for an hour, my breathing becoming shallower.

you do not yawn because you are tired..its because you need more air in your lungs..usually in a hot room everyone will yawn.
