In a 400, at a meet when you're going for time, this is how I have best been coached...you stride out (take long steps but maintain speed) the first 100-150. Then begin to accelerate on the back stretch into the second curve, and flat out sprint the last 100-150. If you become conditioned enough you will be able to sprint the last 200. Of course at high levels it is a sprint the entire way, but not in most cases during high school. Good times: for a guy in high school 43 to 47 seconds is really fast. 41-42 would possibly win state at a 5A meet.
girl: you're lookin at low 50's as a very good time, mid 50's also would take some meets.

800 meter: Guys: 1 minute 40 seconds give or take a few seconds
Girls: right under two minutes is cruisin.

that's a touch strong time for the 400. contained in the 400 you do not take a slow %.. You supply it your all each and every step of how and doubtless the ultimate one hundred meters or so push your self to sprint extremely quickly. The 400 is a perplexing race yet you look doing properly already

Basically your goal should be to sprint the 400. Your first100 should be a burst to make up ground and establish position. Settle into a good pace for the far straight away and accellerate to your top speed b/t 200-300 so that by the last straight away you are at top speed. Good times for girls in HS are generally under 60 with elite girls going under 55. Respective times for the 800 are usually under 220 with under 210 being elite.

The 400m is really a long sprint. It isn't the same all-out burst as the 100m or the 200m but it's a hard run the whole way.

Well, you can do both, if you're going to sprint the 400, dont start off to fast or you'll hit "the wall" around the 300 mark(when you have no energy left) and try to keep it around a minute. If you jog it try to keep it around 1min45sec-2min 15sec. Remember to Pace yourself to its longer than you think! : )

I did pretty well pacing myself and going all out the last 100 meters. But depends on your own abilities.. Try different approaches.
