First of all pay no attention to the d i c k h e a d who gave you the first answer, hes obviously an idiot. Do you like any sports? If you do you could join a team. Ive only started college myself and i got a 5-a-side football team going which has made me so many friends at this stage. Seriously something as small as that can make the difference. Even if you're not into sports you could find something like a film society or drama club. I know its hard to do stuff if youre shy but theres nothing to be afraid of really. Trust me it'll be worth taking that first step. Good luck dude

Try looking into groups and clubs that you would be interested in. I attend SUNY at Buffalo and there is a club for just about anything: Anime, DDR, intramurals, singing groups, etc. Different ethnic groups have their own clubs and the same applies for international students. The best thing about joining a club is that you already know you share some common interest before you even talk to anyone. I was extremely shy my first time with the marching band, but once you get to know everyone it is great.
If joining a club isn't your thing or there isn't one that fits your interests there is always talking to people in your classes. If you happen to be really good in a particular subject you could organize a study group for the other students in your class who could use the help.
The most important thing to bear in mind is that everyone else that is new to the school is in the same position as you are. Do your best to keep an open mind and do things that you didn't in high school, because that is all part of the college experience.

Join a club or organization. Pledge a frat next semester. Get involved, basically. It's much easier to join an organization and meet people that way because it removes the awkward random approach and you are automatically meeting people with similar interests. Do you live in a dorm, if so go to floor meetings and other dorm events. If none of this appeals to you, next semester take a seminar class with very few students and group projects, then you are guaranteed to meet people. Good luck. Before you know it you will be making too many friends to keep up with.
