I live in Florida last year my daughters school acknowledged Veteran's day and the kids had the day off, this year they did not. In honor of family and friends who have served my husband and I decided to keep her home.

Not to offend anyone but the schools here celebrate Columbus Day, Presidents Day, Martin Luther King Day...yet they do not ackowledge those who fought to keep this country free.

Does anyone else agree that all schools should ackowledge this day?

I am aware that Veteran's day is the 11th and we do have plans to honour our Veteran's tomorrow. However all schools in the surrounding counties are closed today in observance of veteran's day except for ours. For many years the school has not ackowledged Veteran's day I was shocked when they did so last year.

My grandfather is a WWII vet, I have numerous uncle's who fought in Korea/Vietnam...my hubby is Gulf War Vet...and I have friends and family currently in Iraq.

Snow days let them make them up over the summer or take one day off of Christmas break/spring break etc...Our veteran's are the reason we are able to ask, and answer questions such as these.

i think it's a crying shame that our veterans aren't honored more. God bless them and their willingness to fight for our freedom.

The state mandates a minimum number of days that school must be in session. The local school system then decides which days are recognized as holidays. Obviously, they can't do everyone on the calendar. I do agree with you that Veterans Day should be one of those days. We have that problem at work also, however, veterans here can have the day off if they want with no pay.

Veteran's Day, originally Armistice Day, is November 11th, which is a Saturday this year.

So I'm not sure why you feel the keeping your child home on a Friday is acknowledging the day. It would be more meaningful for her and for the veterans if you were to take her to a parade tomorrow, or visit a graveyard and see all the American Flags placed on those who served.

In the North, there are more potential snow days, and so less holiday days can be granted to guarantee a minimum number od teaching days.
