while taking antibiotics when on the pill??

2006-11-10 02:56:49 · 13 answers · asked by KBILLIOT22 2 in Pregnancy & Parenting Pregnancy

well, the reason i'm asking is b/c it has been quite some time since I took the anitibiotics. My GP that prescribed them didn't tell me anything and I sure didn't think to ask him. AND I wouldn't be asking this question if I didn't have sex. It's not a big problem if I am or not I was just wondering. Thanks for the help!

I was on bactrim for a surgery I had on my leg. And then the next week I was on Omnicef 300 mg for sinus infection and bronchitis.

Some decrease the effictiveness of the pill. Tetracycline is one of them. Always read the little warning brochures that they give you at the pharmacy, they will tell you the effects on other drugs. Also, when the doctor asks you what other medications you are taking, be sure to tell that you are on the pill.

There's always a chance no matter the precautions you take. But just to be absolutely sure I'd stop taking the pill and go to the doctor to make sure. And while your while your off the pill to see if your pregnant be extra careful when being intimate if being pregnant isnt right for you at the moment. If you think your only 3wks or earlier, stop the pill now slow down the antiboitics but continue to take them, and wait a couple of wks. and go to the doctor to find out. Best Wishes

I don't know what the percentage is, but my pharmacist was quite upset my doctor had me on long term antibiotics AND birth control. However, I did not get pregnant, but by then my ex b/f and I weren't having much sex either!!!

certain antibiotics can stop your birth control from working. What antibiotic were you on? How many mg's (the strength)

What have antibiotics to do with the anti-conception effects of the pill? One thing has nothing to do with the other. If you are taking the pill you should be relatively safe.

Ask your OB/GYN. You're never on antibiotics for too long, so maybe they don't effect anything, but I have no idea. Maybe you can try WebMD?
