I think they were mainly active in the seventies- their opening sequence was a muscular topless guy striking a huge gong. This is really doing my head in! Anybody have any ideas?

It was a company called the Rank organisation who eventually merged with Fox and lost the symbol. Incidentally the last man who banged the gong for them died in August :-(

Rank Films, who made films in the 50s/60s and went bust in the late70s. Rank also had a spell in the music business making and releasing Vinyl records in the late 50s/60s, these also had the man and gong on the label which was red & white.

J Arthur Rank (now a euphemism for something wholly different) Films is the answer you're looking for.

Named after Joseph Arthur Rank, a Bradford (UK) flour miller who founded the massive Rank Leisure, Rank Industries and in the 1970's merged his Rank Milling with Hovis (bread) and McDougal (flour) to form RHM the huge food producing conglomerate. Rank studio's are in Ellstree (London) and are still there to this day.
