The first- and second- generation iMacs (CRT models) are a pain to take apart (but I have ripped open my Bondi Blue several times anyway!). The hard drive is at the very bottom of the case, so you must unscrew the bottom half from the top (monitor), then remove the motherboard + daughtercard, then remove CD-ROM, and then finally you will have access to the hard drive. Check out this link for some very helpful pics and instructions when taking apart and re-assembling...

I'm not familiar with Macs, so I can't help in its disassembly, but...
If security of the data is really an issue, than you should consider completely destroying the hard drive. Simply formating the drive, using magnets, solvents, or other methods are not 100% effective. I'd consider tossing the whole unit in a compactor if you are really worried about data. Others have also ground the platters. Check the attached sites for more information.

Well if you are throwing away the computer , I would Suggest a good size hammer, a drop from a verry high place, run over by a car, drowned in water, a toxic poisioning of a mixture of bleach and amonia ( careful of fumes though there toxic but makes a real nasty chemical reactive acid) maybe not the answer you were looking for but will produce the same results, other than that dont really know

Why do u have to remove and destroy it when u want to trash the computer? Please delete the partition of the hd by using fdisk, corresponding mac command, and repartition the hd. Format it and now ur secret/confidential data cannot be accessed by any one. U can trash the entire system in one piece.

Opening an CRT imac is very difficult. Try to have a professional open it up for you(less risk of hurting yourself). If you want to do this yourself, do a google search and you should find instructions on how to do it. Since you plan on getting rid of it , you could torch it and risk explosion, or turn it into a macquarium. http://www.imacquarium.com/
Hope this helps -CK
