I have taken a lot of trigonometry and seeing you've gotten some different answers, I'll try and help you out.
the cos^-1 means the inverse cos. It basically means that the cosine of what angle equals .5.
cos^-1 (.5) = pi/3 (60 degrees, but it's easier to keep it radians)
now, the tangent of pi/3 = rt3
and that is your answer, the squareroot of 3

Raising cos to the negative one power is asking the following: the cos of what angle gives you 0.5. The answer is 60°. Now what is the tan of that angle, it is 3^-0.5 which is 1.7....

let cos ^1 .5 = y

cos y = .5

now sin y = sqrt(1-.5^2) = sqrt(3/4)

tan y = sin y/ cos y = sqrt(3/4)/(1/2)
