additional information:
The world bank is usually the best source for international information. You can also look for papers on the effects of trade, which sometimes has this sort of information. I doubt that 40 years of data exist for 3rd world countries.

2) Google "Statistical Abstract of the United States"

Both of these sources should have what I like to more appropriately refer to as income distribution data going back for some time.

Remember income is earned, not stolen or doled out by some king or warlord. If it were doled out, then 'inequality' may be appropriate.
