The guts of the heating part are more expensive than the heating guts in an electric one. For electric you need just a heating element and a thermostat with some fat wires. Gas needs a fuel valve with a pilot and the interior pipes and an exhaust stack.

We have no gas mains in our part of town but if we did I would try gas anyway because drying a load of clothes is cheaper and that makes up for the higher initial cost.

because they would like to rip you off more, not only are you pay more for the gas, you now have to pay more for the gas to run the dryer... and where i live the gas bill is a hell of a lot more expensive then the electricity bill. But maybe it has to do with the whole global warming thing, mybe they do not want you to buy the gas dryers so they jack em up in price,
