you have them now when you reach around 20 years old and then at least every three years.

They test for any changes in the cells.

It has been found that looking at a tiny number of the cells from the neck of the womb (cervix) allows us to predict those people who are likely to develop cancer later on. Looking at the cells in this way is called cervical cytology.

A pap smear test looks for abnormal cells on your cervix. These can be caused by some STDs, but others do not change your cervix. Some pap smears look for HPV, which is an STD, but this is by no means the norm. If you have reason to think that you may have an STD, you need to tell your doctor, and they can order bloodwork or other tests to find out what's going on with you. Early treatment is key for STDs, so don't wait.

A smear or PAP test should be done yearly, every 4 years would be very risky. The test is a scraping of cells from the cervix and is used to detect changes that could lead to cancer. It is a test for cell changes not for any STD's. If you wanted to be screed for an STD you would have to ask for that specifically. It is the same as any other test, if you have a strep throat test that tests for strep not say mono. Hoever if you were having a discharge or other symptoms this might promt testing for an STD but the PAP is not the test used.

A pap smear tests for abnormal cells in the cervix. It does NOT test for STD's. If you want to be tested for STD's you need to ask for those tests separately. Some docs office might automatically test for them but most don't. You should have a pap smear YEARLY when you turn 18 or become sexually active which ever comes first.

They test for irregular cells on your cervix, they cannot tell if you have an std unless there are obvious signs (dodgy discharge or warts or something) but if you are worried you can request a sti test at the same time- might as well kill two birds with one stone, if youve got to have someone looking up your moo moo might as well get it all done on that one time, save you having to go back another time and have it all done again, as an std test is near enough the same as a smear

Cervical smear is screening test for females to pick up any precancerous cells and this information is relevant to UK only, it may vary in other countries as per their screening programmes. recent guidelines suggest First smear aged 25 and then every 3 years until 50, In UK, the lab will only report on Cervical cells and not on any STDS, because the scrappings from neck of womb are smeared onto glass slide and looked under microscope for cells. For STD detection you need special culture medium or specimen bottles which are sent to lab for further analysis.

It's a test to see if you have any pre-cancerous cells that if left untreated could develop into cancer. Treatment is usually in the form of lasers which zap them. If you want to check for STD's, enquire at the GP surgery or ring your local family planning clinic and they can tell you the best route to take. I know that you can get tested for Chlymydia at the same time as having a smear test.

Smear tests test for any abnormal cells within the womb, this can be either cancerous cells or infections/std's. There usually done every 2 years and are normally start from the age of 18. However if u take the pill etc it can sometimes be advised to have 1 earlier (age wise).

One time when I had a smear test there was nothing wrong in the sense of precancerous cells (the main point of testing) but they did pick up that I had chlamydia. This was very fortunate as I was only about 20, and if left untreated it might have damaged my fertility (I didn't think I was at risk and would never have thought to be tested).

Here's a good website on cervical smears: http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=2756

They test for abnormal cells in your uterus, which could be a indication of more serious conditions, which is why it's important to go for the tests regularly. They can test for STD's, as when I had mine this year, they asked if I wanted that swab done as well, 'while they were down there', so to speak. It doesn't test for all the STD's, though, so if you are worried, you should go for a bloodtest. Hope this helps!
