Did all you sox fans die during the past month? Boston will land him. Theo knows he needs to add a spark to a rotation with an old and possibly retiring Schilling, a not 100% healthy Wakefield, and a Beckett who has too many head problems he needs to work through. GO SOX!!! 2007 (according to espn only 5 teams bid, nyy bos tex i know for sure, but the press conference will be held today so we'll find out by tomorrow.)

Whatever the answer, it will be interesting.
The amount of money the team that wins the bid, and assuming they sign him after, will end up spending will possibly mean that over a 3 year period, the team will spend more money on this guy than anyone in the history of baseball.
Assume the winning bidder bids $20M (as estimated on ESPN).
Scott Boras is his agent, and says that he will seek a short term contract of 3 years so that he can hit the free agent market in 3 years and get even more money. Boras says that he will demand $55M over 3 years.
The $55M plus $20M spent in bidding, totals $75M.
So, the team that wins the bid, if they sign him, will be theoretically spending $25M per year on this guy.
I'm sure this guy is good - really good even. But is he so great that it's worth a team $75M over 3 years?
That's quite a lot for a guy that's never played in the major leagues before.

My best guess would be the Yankees or Mets, but the Yankees might be a bit gun shy. They seem to have a horrible record when it comes to signing pitchers who leave their native country to come to America, such as Hideki Irabu (who Stienbrenner later refered to as a "fat toad") and Jose Contreras (who only succeeded when he got out of New York).
Something tells me that if the Yanks do succeed in luring the Japanese phenom, he will fall apart under the managment and stress of playing in New York, just as Irabu and Contreras did.

I was watching ESPN news last night and Steve Phillips was saying that you need a bid of at least $20 million to get a chance to sign him.
Let's face it. Only Steinbrenner throws around that kind of money for a player. He'll probably be a Yankee.

Very few teams have actually bid. I would say the Yankees are the favorite. They have the most money. I believe the winner will be announced today.

I say it is the Yanks or Mets. Boss has the money and history, but Minaya has determination and a good club.
